When I first got this, I immediately got a treat stuck in there that none of us could budge for about 3 months. I trimmed some of the little plastic holders around it to no avail. I just added more food kibbles and figured my dog had a good project for when I left for work. It took him several days, but one day I came home to a completely empty toy. I have no idea how he did it. The difficulty is perfect for my little guy, though. The standard Kong stuffed with kibble and varying levels of peanut butter took him 10 minutes, tops. This one, on the otherhand, is truly a challenge. Things don't just fall out, even when he rolls it around. He isn't interested in it when the food is gone, but since the food is really hard to get, it entertains him for longer. The other nice thing is that peanut butter isn't a necessity to "seal" the food in there. 1/4 cup of dry kibble spread between the 3 openings and he is good. It takes a special dog to keep at this though. My other girl easily loses interest in anything harder to solve than the kong. My anxiety-ridden, food-driven dachshund mix, who has earned the name 'scissor mouth', on the other hand, finds true doggy joy in each hard earned morsel he pries out of this crazy thing.

I bought one barnacle toy... then both my dogs wanted it.It became the most popular food toy in the house.I have a 24lb boston terrier & a 65lb shepherd mix - both love this toy.It takes them about 40 min - 1 hour to clear all 3 chambers - as opposed to the other food toys with 1 chamber.Great alternative to the standard Kong classic, the Kong goodie bone, Busy Buddy Waggle, the Chuckle, and the Twist N Treat (all favorite food toys in our house).

The toy smells terrible to me. Weird chemical rubbery nastiness. The dog is completely in love with it. He's a Chessie mix and ball crazy in general. A ball that dispenses breakfast must be magic. He brings it to be filled every morning. It will only hold a cup of food but that will vary with how the pellets are shaped. It only takes him about 15-20 minutes to empty the food our but then he enjoys dropping it and catching it when it's empty. It is heavy for its size and it bounces erratically so it does bang into people and furniture pretty hard and unexpectedly but so does he. I do very much hope the smell fades but even if doesn't, I am still using it every morning.

Our dogs are pretty good at getting the frozen meat out of treats balls they have learned. This one was hard enough that they initially couldn't so I cut the prongs covering each hole and they are starting to figure it out. We really like it because it keeps them busy.

A fun addition to our mealtime kibble dispensing toys. My dogs love how it bounces erratically when they nudge, paw or drop it. It makes for a nice change from the rolling and wobbly toys. I've already spent the time teaching my dogs that this type of toy is not for chewing and they haven't tried chewing on this one so I don't know how it would hold up to a determined chewer. It is a bit of a hassle to load the kibble into all 3 areas without some dropping out and I can't use my normal method of pouring kibble into the openings with a wide funnel as the barbs to keep the kibble in are set so far into the toy the funnel base can't push them open and so the barbs prevent the kibble from dropping into the toy. Loading toys kibble by kibble is a huge time-waster when I'm getting toys ready for 3 dogs and the only reason this didn't get 5 starts. If the toy isn't easy to fill, I can spend more time loading the toys then the dogs do emptying them.

This "treat toy" is fantasic! I got a large for my 50 pound australian shepherd, which was just right. I used this to feed him his breakfast in the morning, just to give him some mental excersize. He is most motivated to "work" for his kibbles in the morning. :-) He figured it out quickly! His kibble is approximately 1/2 inch per bit. They loaded easily into the compartments. The largest compartment allowed some to fall out very easily. The smallest took some work. If your dog is not motivated or tenacious about his kibbles, he might not work as hard to get it out of the smallest ball. Smaller treats would fit well. (I quarter liver training treats, so those are itty bitty and they are easier for him to get out of the smallest compartment.) After using the toy to eat, he likes the play with it. He will pick it up and drop it and watch it bounce around in unpredictable ways, and then pounce! Overall and very fun toy!Moderate chewers (average), not for strong or problem chewers.
